Changes to Shopify Custom Apps

Starting from January 1, 2026, Shopify have removed the ability to create legacy custom apps. To create and manage new apps you need to use the Dev Dashboard and use the client credentials grant type to acquire an access token for your app.

We've released an update to the fmEcommerce Link (Shopify Edition) solution to support working with apps created using the Dev Dashboard and to generate an access token and update the token if it has expired.

In v2.4 we've added 2 new fields to enter your Client ID and Client Secret in the Client Credentials section on the SETUP screen:

Once you have entered your Client ID and Client Secret click the Authenticate button to request an Access Token - Access Tokens expire after 24 hours. We've updated the scripts that make requests to the Shopify API to check if you're using the client credentials grant type and update the Access Token if it has expired.

You can get more information about the new process for creating custom apps using the Dev Dashboard and working with the client credentials grant type on the Shopify website at the following links:

v2.4 is a free update for any fmEcommerce Link (Shopify Edition) v2 customer with a current maintenance plan. All fmEcommerce Link (Shopify Edition) customers receive 12 months of free updates – you can purchase an additional 12 months of updates from our online store if you original 12 months of updates has expired and you have not purchased another year of maintenance updates. If you’re not sure when access to free updates expires please get in touch and we will confirm your expiry date.
